SBA Hearing in Portland, Maine has strong HME showing

Today a group of VGM and HOMES members testified before the Small Business Administration at a regulatory fairness hearing in Portland, Maine. Providers shared the ramifications of the cuts to rural providers from the nationwide expansion of competitive bidding.

These hearings are open to the public and are yet another resource small businesses can use to propel their business. The attendance by DMEPOS and CRT providers at similar SBA hearings across the country has resulted in strong support for the industry from the SBA. That support has immensely helped the industry’s efforts in strengthening rural health care!

At the Portland hearing, HOMES President and CEO Karyn Estrella discussed the many flaws within CMS’ Competitive Bidding Program saying,
“When…competitive bidding began in July 2013, 50 percent of our members were excluded overnight. CMS awarded 50 percent of the Medicare contracts in the New England CBAs to companies hundreds, even thousands, of miles away. Many of these local companies served a large Medicare population were unable to survive after exclusion.”

VGM’s John Gallagher attended the hearing and was extremely happy with the attendance and testimony given. “Today’s testimony left a lasting impression with the challenges that providers are facing with competitive bidding and the audit process,” said John. “All of VGM and HOMES members presented strong arguments and examples, which reinforced the urgency of delaying the July cuts to reimbursement rates and offering reforms to CMS.”
