|CMS recently announced that the KU modifier will continue to be used on the claim line to ensure accurate reimbursement for accessories used on Group 3 power wheelchairs (HCPCS codes K0848-K0864) through June 30, 2017. The continued use of the KU modifier is great news as it will require providers to use less resources to receive accurate reimbursement for CRT accessories.
The use of the KU modifier will enable the processing system to use the 2017 unadjusted fee schedule for dates of service Jan. 1 – June 30, 2017. This means providers will NOT have to submit a written reopening to receive accurate reimbursement as was required for the first half of 2016. This is not a new process, just a continuation of the process that was implemented on July 5, 2016.
Greg Packer of U.S. Rehab says, “Thanks to the efforts of CRT providers and industry advocates, Congress is able to recognize the importance of preserving patient access to this vital equipment. The implementation of the CRT provisions within the Cures Act is a step in the right direction for a long-term solution that ensures providers have the means to deliver the highest level of care to each and every patient.”
