President Trump’s pick to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Seema Verma was confirmed by the full Senate late yesterday. Verma will replace Andy Slavitt, a position he held from 2015 to January 2017. Verma was confirmed by a vote of 55-43.
Verma, who has worked with multiple state governments to implement Medicaid reforms, is most well known for her work with then Governor Mike Pence on “Healthy Indiana 2.0”. Her consulting firm assisted Indiana implement Medicaid expansion and reforms in an effort to ensure the program’s sustainability.
Through the confirmation process Verma has conveyed that she is committed to implementing reforms that would improve health outcomes for beneficiaries saying, “This is the United States of America. We can do better for these vulnerable populations.”
